Quercetin is a polyphenol present naturally in many foods, especially vegetables, fruits, wines and herbs . In particular, onions, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, apples, berries, red wines and certain herbs are all potent sources of Quercetin. It is a very effective antioxidant and free radical scavenger . In addition, it has powerful anti-allergic, anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory characteristics . Quercetin has also shown cardiovascular, anti-diabetic, anti-viral, anti-hypertensive protection.
Physiologically, Qurecetin inhibits histamine release, decreases pro-inflammatory cytokines production and suppresses the formation of antigen-specific IgE antibodies, Cyclooxigenase (COX) Lipooxygenase LOX) enzymes, eosinophil and other pro-inflammatory mediators.
Many clinical studies have demonstrated Quercetin’s benefits in prevention and amelioration of symptoms in conditions such as asthma, COPD, allergic rhinitis and many other ailments .
Researchers from Michigan State University observed a significant reduction of CRP and other pro-inflammatory mediators levels in study subjects taking Quercetin versus placebo . In another study, a four-fold increase plasma levels of Quercetin in patients supplementing the compound demonstrated a significant reduction of COPD symptoms and progression of the disease versus placebo group .
A Japanese study on rats with induced allergic rhinitis also showed a significant reduction of the symptoms with supplementation of 25mg/kg for 7 days and overall improvement of upper respiratory mucosa .
Vitamin C (S-ascorbic palmitate) is an essential nutrient for human body and one of the most researched of all vitamins. Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) are fatty acids naturally present in many foods. One of the most abundant sources of MCT is coconut oil, containing over 60% of MCT.
Because of their short chain structure, MCTs are quickly absorbed and metabolised by the liver and utilised by the body . They also promote the production of ketones, a favorite source of energy for the brain’s and muscles’ tissues. Consequently, calories from MCTs are normally used more efficiently for energy production than calories from glucose and are therefore less likely to turn into adipose tissue (body fat).
Chemically, MCTs are mainly made up of fatty acids Capric Acid C6, Caprillic Acid C8, Capric Acid C10 and Lauric Acid C12.
