What is Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Mei Zen cosmetic acupuncture is a natural, non-surgical procedure that offers a viable and highly acclaimed alternative to invasive injections, fillers and chemical treatments. The treatment involves placing tiny, painless acupuncture needles into various points on the face.

What can I expect over the course of this treatment?

Mei Zen is a 10 treatment protocol, with each appointment lasting 45 to 60 minutes. The treatments are scheduled twice a week for 5 weeks, with a minimum of 24 hours between appointments. During your first appointment lasting approximately 60 minutes, a history is taken to determine your candidacy for treatment and to discuss your goals and determine if Mei Zen is right for you. Following this is an examination and the capture of pre-treatment photos. You will discuss post treatment skin care along with dietary recommendations and best practices to get the most out of your Mei Zen experience. Acupuncture is then scheduled for the required 10 sessions.  These treatments use very fine needles that remain in for 20-30 minutes. After the acupuncture is finished, a skin soothing solution is applied. All follow up visits include an examination, acupuncture, and time to answer any questions you may have.

How does cosmetic acupuncture work?

As we age, our inner layer of skin loses collagen, resulting in less-supple skin and loss of firmness. Placing very fine, single-use needles in the face and body can activate the body’s own self-healing, which in turn can increase blood circulation, improve muscle tone and regulate the body, stimulating collagen production. This increase of collagen performs many functions (including but not limited to):

  • May assist in an increase in cell regeneration, reduction in wrinkles, fine lines, crow’s feet, puffiness, drooping eyelids, and rosacea
  • May  reduce acne, blotchy or spotty skin, sagging skin, and drooping jowls
  • May help firm skin while enhancing the quality and texture
  • May help improve skin’s elasticity and moisture retention
  • May tighten muscles in the face and the neck while also relaxing tension in the nerves

These functions combine with other well-known, non-cosmetic benefits of acupuncture such as reduced anxiety and headaches, calmed hot flashes and night sweats, improved digestion, increased energy, and much more.

What should I expect after the 10 treatments are complete?

Continuation of dietary recommendations is one of the keys to your continued success. A good mantra to remember is “You are what you eat”. By way of acupuncture, the current recommendation is at least two “tune-up” treatments per year (1 every 6 months) to help maintain your results and more youthful appearance.

Results from cosmetic acupuncture may last 3-5 years with proper care. This depends heavily on your lifestyle, and whether you are willing to address other areas that may need attention such as exercise, nutrition, and stress reduction. At a fraction of the cost of other procedures, however, cosmetic acupuncture is a sound alternative that can restore your radiant glow both inside and out.

What are the risks involved with cosmetic acupuncture?

Minor and temporary facial and neck bruising (although rare) are the most common side effects of cosmetic acupuncture, with most bruising disappearing within 2 weeks. Recovery time is fast and there is minimal risk of infections, swelling or scarring. We do not recommend cosmetic acupuncture if you are pregnant, have had recent botox injections, uncontrolled hypertension, are a smoker or have tanned recently.
